Projects/Papers/Activities for Some Chapters (Cafeteria Plan)

Each of the following Activities may take one to four hours to complete.
The project value depends on the estimate number of hours to complete:
approximately 10 points per 60 to 75 minutes (~ one hour).

Most projects are optional.

The student should select the projects that parallel the chapters which interest the student the most.
The selection is can be called the Cafeteria Plan (smorgasbord ).
The student may need to complete a few of these projects (approximately 150 points)
or complete the extra credit chapters 15, 16 and 17 (approximately 32-28-32=92 points)
to finish the course with enough points to earn a minimum A.

Traditional Face-to-Face Classes and Hybrid Classes

Traditional Face-to-Face (F2F) Classes meet 3 hours per week on a 15 week schedule, either twice a week for 75-90 minutes or once a week for 2 hours 55 minutes one time a week. A three semester college credit course requires 2250 minutes of inclass instruction. One Hour of In-Class instruction is based on a 50 minute clock hour. An outside the class study hour is based on a 60 minute clock hour.
    Each scheduled on campus Class will have a lecture on the featured Chapter of the week.
    Each week there will be a paper & pencil exam on the previous week's chapter.
    Generally all paper & Pencil proctored in-class closed book test will be given the last ~30 minutes of class. Those needing more time must continue to work after the scheduled end of class time to finish.
Generally a F2F Class may have up to 30% of the class with required online activities.

On-Campus Hybrid Classes meet 1-2 hours per week on a 15 week schedule, once a week for 60-120 minutes (Usually 75 minutes). The student is expected to watch online all the videos for that chapter in-leau of attending traditional lectures.
    Each scheduled on campus Class will have a brief/short partial lecture on the featured Chapter of the week. Not all the sections/parts of the assigned chapter will be covered by the short lecture.
    Each week there will be a paper & pencil exam on the previous week's chapter.
    Generally all paper & Pencil proctored in-class closed book test will be given the last 30 minutes of class.
Those needing more time must continue to work after the scheduled end of class time to finish.

A chapter study pack may be be distributed each week with sample paper & pencil section by section (or part by part) tests or the student will download an electronic copy from Canvas's Course Informaton the current chapter study pack. The menu below also links to the study packs. If you open the Study Pack WORD document in your computer, then all the hyperlinks will function. Beginning the second week there will be a 30 minute paper and pencil exam either at the beginning or the end of the class period as explained above.

There will be in-class** a required midterm multiple choice exam, closed book, and a closed book fill-in-the blank vocabulary midterm (with a chapter by chapter word list) The midterm will be 60 mulitple choice questions from Chapters 1-6 End-of-Chapter Quizzzes and the vocabulary will be 40 words from chapters 1-6

There will be in class** a required end-term multiple choice exam, closed book, and a closed book fill-in-the blank vocabulary comprehensive Final (with a chapter by chapter word list). There will be 40 multiple choice questions from chapter 7,9,10,12,13 and a 100 fill-in-the-blank vocabulary words from chapter 1-17.

The student may perform the above midterm/endterm.final exams online, open book counting exactly the same nomber of points.For online students these online Exams will replace the in-class exams and may be proctored

Gateway Criteria: The student must score 60% or more on the multiple choice and 70% or more on the vocabulary or penalities will be invoked subtracting one half the credit previous earned on end-of-chapter quizzes or chapter vocabulary quizzes.

** For Hybrid Classes these Exams may be required to be completed in the Testing (Assessment) Center.

    Chemistry: Challenges and Solutions teaches general chemistry concepts using real-life challenges in energy, materials development, biochemistry, and the environment.
